LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 17, 2026) – With some Lakeshore voters being asked to cast ballots seven weeks from Tuesday, and the August 4th Primary coming later this summer, the question of when elections are held is being debated in Lansing.
Last week, the Senate Elections and Ethics Committee approved a package of seven bills which would move the primary from the first Tuesday in August to the first Tuesday in May. Local clerks claim that the current 90-day window between the primary and general election is too short now to handle all of the new early voting requirements.
Meanwhile, two bills cleared the House which would, if signed into law, limit new or increased local millage and school bond proposals to appear only on the November general election ballot. This is a change that term-limited Senate Minority Whip Roger Victory of Hudsonville is in favor of.
On the May 5th ballot, Holland and Saugatuck schools are seeking sinking fund approvals, while MAX Transit has an operating millage request, and Hopkins schools has put forward a $110.5 million bond proposal.
