ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 30, 2026) – A Lakeshore community’s leaders are set to take a hard look at the short-term financial future.
The Zeeland City Council will huddle with City Manager Tim Klunder and other senior staffers on Monday evening, beginning two consecutive nights of review sessions over the proposed Fiscal Year 2026-27 budget. The more than $81.6 million spending plan is roughly half a million dollars more than expected revenues, which would necessitate a transfer of funds from reserves to balance the books.
First-term Mayor Rick Van Dorp sees consolidation more than expansion in the upcoming financial blueprint.
Klunder has based his proposed budget on a millage rate of just over 11.1 mills, a level that has remained steady since 2010 outside of years affected by the COVID outbreak. A public hearing and a formal vote on the spending plan is slated for May 3rd.
Both nights of the Zeeland City Council Budget Review sessions are set for 5:30 PM in Chambers at Zeeland City Hall (21 S. Elm St.). Online links to each evening’s agenda and supporting documents are here for Monday, and here for Tuesday.
