ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 20, 2026) – No final decision will be made on Monday night, but those affected by a proposed snowmelt operation and maintenance special assessment in downtown Zeeland will get a final chance to speak their peace.
During the biweekly business meeting, the City Council will hold a public hearing on the planned levy of 92 cents per square foot for a commodity or heating charge, and a $1.10 per square foot for a readiness to serve or capital charge, which will be waived for this winter and next winter. This stems from the installation of snowmelt infrastructure along Main Avenue, with future levies to be determined following further data collection.
Single-family homeowners, as well as property owned by Zeeland Public Schools and the US Postal Service, are exempt from snowmelt system charges. City officials say that the city would still be handling 82 percent of the total annual operating cost of nearly $246,000 under this proposal.
A final vote on Zeeland’s snowmelt assessment, as well as on the proposed Fiscal 2027 municipal budget, is planned for two weeks from Monday, May 4.
The Zeeland City Council has a 6 PM Work-Study Session ahead of the 7 PM Regular Meeting, both in Chambers at Zeeland City Hall (21 S. Elm St.). An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
