HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jun. 2, 2026) – There will be contested races for Congress along the Lakeshore on the August 4th Primary Election ballot.
Over the weekend, former Holland Mayor Phil Tanis formally announced his intention to challenge eight-term incumbent Bill Huizenga for the Republican nomination. The 61-year-old director of Hope College’s Van Raalte Institute spent six years on the Holland City Council in the 1980’s, becoming the Tulip City’s youngest-ever elected mayor in 1987.
It the second straight primary in which Huizenga is being challenged within his own party, as he fended off then-Ottawa County Republican Party Chairman Brendan Muir two years ago before defeating Democratic hopeful Jessica Swartz by 12 percentage points. This August, term-limited state Senator Sean McCann and Diop Harris II are vying for the Democratic Party nomination.
