WRIGHT TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Sept. 27, 2026) – A man lost his life in a three-vehicle pileup near Marne around 12 Midnight on Sunday.
No names were disclosed following the incident, which occurred on westbound I-96 near the M-11 junction. First responders were dispatched, at approximately 12:15 AM, where they found a sedan ablaze in the median, while a pick up truck along the median had been damaged, along with a semi which had attempted to enter the freeway from Ironwood Drive.
Deputies and bystanders were able to extricate the driver of the vehicle on fire, a 23-year-old man from the Mason County village of Custer, who was subsequently taken to an “area hospital” in serious but stable condition, but his passenger, who was also pinned in, died at the scene. The trucker, a 41-year-old Davidson man, was not hurt, and the pickup was unoccupied at the time.
It was determined by investigators that the sedan attempted to pass the semi on the shoulder when it struck the parked pickup. It then veered into the path of the semi and ended up in the median, where a fire broke out in the engine department.
