Four Hope College winter student-athletes have been honored by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association: junior Greta Gidley in women’s swimming, junior Abby Koops in women’s diving, sophomore Sara Schermerhorn in women’s indoor track and senior Tanner Wiegerink in men’s basketball.
Gidley (Franklin, Michigan / Mercy HS) is the MIAA Women’s Swimming Athlete of the Week for the second time this season and the third time in her career.
The junior helped the Flying Dutch claim their fourth consecutive MIAA title while participating in three individual races and three relays.
Gidley repeated as champion in the 200-yard individual medley by setting MIAA and school records with a swim of 2 minutes, 00.79 seconds.
The elementary education major won the 100 butterfly in 55.08 seconds and finished runner-up in the 100 freestyle.
Koops (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) is the MIAA Women’s Diving Athlete of the Week for the third time this season and the 11th time in her career.
The junior swept both boards at the MIAA Championships for the third consecutive season.
A nursing major, Koops won on 3 meter by posting a score of 428.10 points and 1 meter with a total of 415.95 points.
Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West) is the MIAA Indoor Women’s Track Athlete of the Week for the second time this season and the fourth time in her career.
The sophomore established two individual MIAA records and helped set one relay record while helping the Flying Dutch repeat as league indoor champions.
Schermerhorn won the 200-meter dash in a meet-record 24.91 seconds and the 400-meter run in a meet-record 58.49 seconds. She anchored the meet-record 4×400 relay that went 4:02.20.
Nationally, Schermerhorn is ranked third in the 200, ninth in the 400 and 26th in the 60-meter dash. She was MIAA runner-up in the 60 meters.
Wiegerink (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) is the MIAA Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week for the second time this season and the second time in his career.
The 6-7 forward averaged 24.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.0 blocks while helping the Flying Dutchmen win the MIAA Tournament at Trine University last week.
A physical and health education major, Wiegerink shot 82.6% from the free-throw line (19-23).
