Four from Hope College have earned MIAA Athlete of the Week honors: Liam Belote and Gibson Heethuis in men’s lacrosse, and Elliana Johnson and Catherine Leahy in women’s outdoor track and field.
Belote (Saline, Michigan / Saline HS) has been selected as the MIAA Men’s Lacrosse Specialist of the Week, while Heethuis (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) is the MIAA Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Athlete of the Week.
Johnson (East Lansing, Michigan / Haslett) has been chosen as the MIAA Women’s Field Athlete of the Week, while Leahy (Elk Rapids, Michigan / Elk Rapids) is the MIAA Women’s Track Athlete of the Week.
Belote is receiving an MIAA weekly award for the first time.
The sophomore midfielder went 70% on faceoffs (7-of-10) during a 14-13 victory at Aurora University (Ill.) last week while also recording three ground balls, one goal and one caused turnover.
Heethuis is honored by the MIAA for the first time.
The freshman attacker scored six times for the Flying Dutchmen at Aurora, including two during the final two minutes.
Johnson claims the MIAA weekly award for the first time.
The sophomore helped the Flying Dutch win the 18-team Clark Atlanta University Panther Classic on Saturday by placing sixth in the long jump with a leap of 4.75 meters (15 feet, 6 /34 inches) and 10th in the triple jump with a leap of 10.12 meters (33-2 ½). Both leaps rank first in the MIAA.
Leahy is an MIAA Athlete of the Week for the first time.
The sophomore psychology major placed fifth in the 400 meters at Clark Atlanta with a time of 59.51 seconds and 10th in the 200 at 26.39. Leahy’s 400 time is ninth fastest in NCAA Division III; while her 200 time ranks 17th in the nation.
