HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 27, 2024) – The issue of affordable housing has been a primary concern of local leaders for several years. The issue of fair housing hasn’t received as much attention.
That may be about to change somewhat, as the Holland City Council is slated, during its biweekly study session on Wednesday evening, to review an Assessment of Fair Housing Report, done in conjunction with suburban Detroit-based planning and building services firm McKenna. The retained consultants went over data and conducted a public workshop last May, along with contacting leading stakeholders, before submitting its findings late last year.
Among the major conclusions that this report came to are these: There are racial disparities in housing access, unequal representation in publicly supported housing, limited housing options for families with children, and accessibility and accommodations for individuals and households with disabilities. The report’s authors believe that addressing these impediments will require a comprehensive and targeted approach through collaborative efforts.
The Holland City Council study session begins at 6 PM in the second floor Training Room of Holland City Hall (270 S. River Ave.). An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
