LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 28, 2024) – Unemployment rose along the Lakeshore and across the state last month.
In not seasonally adjusted jobless rates disclosed on Thursday by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget, all 17 major labor market areas, and all but two of the state’s 83 counties, saw higher unemployment numbers in February as compared to January. The average hike was three tenths of a percentage point for the labor market areas, and four tenths for counties.
Ottawa County was tied for the second lowest jobless average in Michigan for February at 3.1 percent, along with Kent and Livingston counties, a tenth more than pacesetting Washtenaw County. This rate was two tenths higher than in January, but four tenths below that of February, 2023. Allegan County was eighth statewide at 3.7 percent last month, up three tenths of a percentage point from january, but down seven tenths from that of a year ago.
These rates didn’t come as a surprise to state labor officials, as unemployment normally rises in Michigan during February.
