COVERT TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 18, 2025) – It may be a last-ditch effort to block the inevitable.
Several environmental groups filed a federal lawsuit in Grand Rapids on Monday to prevent the restarting of the Palisades nuclear power plant near Covert. The Complaint for Declaratory and Injunctive Relief, filed by Beyond Nuclear, Don’t Waste Michigan, and Michigan Safe Energy Future, claims Holtec International and the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission broke the law in attempting to resurrect an aged reactor that was poorly maintained and couldn’t compete in the open market.
State Representative Joey Andrews, in whose 38th House District the plant resides, believes that everything that has been done to restart the plant has been above board.
Kalamazoo-based Kevin Kamps of Beyond Nuclear, one of the leading voices against Palisades for years, claims that restarting the plant could lead to a reactor core meltdown on a major scale. That’s something that Andrews, a St. Joseph Democrat, disputes.
Holtec is looking to restart Palisades sometime in 2026. No timetable as to when any court proceedings on this lawsuit was immediately disclosed, as the case will probably be initially heard at the US Circuit Court in Kalamazoo.
