David Lewis Schreur, age 86, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 16, 2025.
David was born in Gaylord, Michigan, on December 15, 1938. He grew up in Allegan and graduated from Allegan High School, where he was known as both a dedicated student and a standout athlete.
He earned his master’s degree in civil engineering with honors from Dartmouth’s Thayer School of Engineering in 1961. After graduating, Dave joined Pickett and Schreur in highway construction and aggregate, working alongside his father, his brother Jeff, and later his brother-in-law, Jim. Through his career, he remained deeply committed to the industry, serving in numerous leadership roles with the Michigan Road Builders Association, including President and Vice President, and representing Michigan nationally through the Association of General Contractors of America on the Tax and Fiscal Affairs Committee.
Following the sale of Pickett and Schreur to Reith-Riley Construction, Dave continued his leadership as Marketing Director and Business Development Manager. After retiring from road building, he pursued a new chapter with his trademark determination, earning his MBA from Grand Valley State University. He went on to become a Certified Financial Planner with Transamerica Financial Advisors, where he continued to guide and support others with his steady wisdom and integrity.
Dave deeply valued his family. He met the love of his life, Sally, while studying at Dartmouth. They shared a whirlwind romance and married in July 1960. Their first addition came shortly thereafter, a golden retriever named “Happy” followed by the children, Sara and Steve, who completed their family. Dave enjoyed joining his family in their activities, from caring for Sara’s horses and teaching her tennis to supporting granddaughters, Anna and Elle at swim meets and assisting Steve with puzzles. He simply loved being part of their lives. He found great joy and satisfaction in supporting his family and friends, always eager to lend a hand and quietly invest in the people he loved.
David was preceded in death by son, Steve Schreur, and a brother-in-law, Jim Cook.
David is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sally Schreur; daughter, Sara and Tom Giesler; granddaughters, Anna Giesler, Elle Giesler; brother, Jeff and Susie Schreur; sister, Deb Cook; nieces and nephews, Amy and John Wiener, Jennifer and Peter Vasiu, Carrie and Dave Mehney, Tom and Jessika Cook, and Betsy and Ed Dempsey.
Visitation with the family is 3:00 – 5:00 pm on Friday, November 21, 2025, at Langeland Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 E. 16th St. Holland, MI 49423.
A Private Celebration of Life will be held at a later time.
Burial to be in Saugatuck Township Cemetery.
