HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 23, 2026) – Students along the Lakeshore are in the midst of an unplanned winter break.
Such a scenario has occurred as classes haven’t been held in public school districts and private schools since last Friday due to wintry weather. Another round of widespread cancellations occurred on Thursday night for this Friday, and it also included Hope College and Grand Rapids Community College’s Lakeshore Campus.
Continual snowfall and arctic cold, along with the Martin Luther King Jr. legal holiday on Monday, has led leaders such as Holland School Superintendent Nick Cassidy to keep buses parked and buildings dark for the entire week.
School districts have a six “snow day” allowance before further cancellations count against the state’s 180-day classroom requirement, and while hard-hit districts can petition the Michigan Department of Education for three additional days before having to tack on school days at the end of the academic year, Cassidy admits that the department “has been stingy” in recent years to issue such waivers.
