PARK TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 11, 2026) – A Lakeshore landmark is close to becoming locally owned.
On Tuesday, Park Township officials announced a “Offer to Purchase” agreement had been signed by the township and the US government for the transfer of the Coast Guard Station off of Ottawa Beach Road to local control. The $1.4 million deal, which has been in the works for nearly two years, had initially been agreed to by both sides verbally last April, with an intent to finalize it in the fall, but the six-week-long federal government shutdown delayed the matter.
The Coast Guard Station, which opened in 1885 on the shores of Lake Macatawa, has sat idle since 2022, when operations were consolidated in Grand Haven.
The Michigan State Historic Office also has to sign off on the deal, since the building has an historic designation. Once cash has changed hands, the property could be owned by the township by the end of this month.
The municipality plans to operate two specially-equipped personal watercrafts out of the site, with a proposal to purchase a rescue boat in the works. State and county agencies will also have access to the facility.
