ZEELAND, MI (Feb. 16, 2026) – Another step in paying for snowmelt in downtown Zeeland will be taken on Monday night.
During the biweekly City Council meeting, Mayor Rick Van Dorp and his fellow members of the governing panel will open things up for a public hearing on establishing a special assessment district for property owners affected by the installation of snow melt on sidewalks last winter.
Over a two-year period, beginning this July, affected property owners will be charged a rate of 92 cents per square foot, with exemptions for Zeeland Public Schools, the US Postal Service, and two owner-occupied, single-family homes, all of which will be paid for by the city at large. A final decision is not expected until next month at the earliest.
Also during this meeting, council is expected to decide whether to award Williams and Works a $49,000 contract for helping to rewrite the city’s master plan over an 18 month-long span. The consultant will work with the city’s Planning Commission on the project, which would include an online community survey, two visioning workshops, and a community open house.
A 5:45 PM Work-Study Session precedes the 7 PM Zeeland City Council business meeting, both in Chambers at Zeeland City Hall (21 S. Elm St.). An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
