HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 28, 2026) – As one local ministry gets ready to handle a major food operation, another has pulled back from its venture.
The Salvation Army of Holland is still targeting a mid-May opening of the weekday Community Kitchen that it is taking over from Western Theological Seminary, with First United Methodist Church off of West 10th Street handling that service for the needy in the interim. Meanwhile, it has been 13 months since Gateway Mission closed its Gateway Spoon eatery off of East 24th Street, as Meijer has submitted plans to the Holland Planning Commission for building a 3,650 square-foot convenience store, with 12 fuel pumps on six islands, that would augment a current station a half mile away.
Dr. Scott Klingberg, Director of Ministry Operations with Gateway, admits that it was a tough decision to end the Spoon initiative after nearly 18 months of operation.
Some of the restaurant equipment was transferred to the Mission’s new Eastport Men’s Center off of Waverly Road, while the rest will be “repurposed” as the eatery is slated for demolition.
