HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jun. 4, 2026) – Another step in transferring the former site of Holland’s historic greenhouse to Evergreen Commons was taken on Wednesday night.
During the biweekly business meeting, the Holland City Council unanimously approved an ordinance amendment that would remove the property where the greenhouse stood – 496 Central Avenue – as a landmark property under the historic district designation. The central greenhouse was taken down last fall brick-by-brick, with plans for it to be rebuilt, sans windows, several blocks away in Centennial Park, according to Assistant City Manager Matt Van Dyken.
The triangular plot at the junction of Central Avenue, State Street and West 20th Street will shortly be ceded to Evergreen Commons now that the designation is removed. Mark DeWitt is Chief Advancement Officer with the Commons.
The governing panel also approved the rezoning of two separate plots of land, totaling around 110 acres near the M-40/I-196 junction, into Open Space in order to accommodate wetland mitigation efforts.
The Holland City Council’s meeting was in Chambers at Holland City Hall (270 S. River Ave.). An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
