GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jun. 10, 2026) – A 19-year-old Hudsonville man will spend the next year-plus in a federal prison.
Ethan Carter was sentenced on Tuesday at US District Court in Grand Rapids to 15 months behind bars on a count of possession and transfer of a machine gun conversion device. In addition, he was ordered to serve two years probation and fined in a guilty plea deal that had other charges against him dropped.
Carter, a standout football player at Hudsonville High, was in Birmingham, Alabama, training ahead of joining the Davenport University team last summer when he was shot nine times while attempting to purchase a gun, suffering serious injuries. Federal agents investigating the matter executed a search warrant of his Michigan home, where evidence was gathered which led to a grand jury coming back with charges last November.
An unnamed person accused of shooting Carter in Alabama is reportedly in custody and awaiting prosecution on attempted murder charges.
