LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jun. 11, 2026) – A Lakeshore community has taken steps to make sure a smelly situation is addressed.
During Wednesday night’s monthly business meeting, the Laketown Township Board of Trustees unanimously approved setting aside up to $25,000 for legal fees if Republic Services fails to evict Cocoa Corporation from using its 60th Street facility for composting operations. The township’s planning commission last week terminated such operations due to ongoing odor issues that Cocoa apparently failed to properly address, but Republic, as landlord of the property, has a lawsuit pending in Allegan County Circuit Court in order to make that action effective.
Supervisor Steven Ringelberg admitted that the township and Republic are on the same page right now about this matter, but cautioned that things could change if the eviction process drags on.
The allocation will go towards the township retaining separate counsel on the matter, as current township attorney Ron Bultje also has Republic as one of his clients. There is no timetable as to if or when Cocoa will be removing its operations from the site.
