Michael Francis Cagney, 67, of Holland, Michigan, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2026, at Holland Hospital, surrounded by family.
Mike was born on May 18, 1959, in Chicago, Illinois, to Mary and George Cagney, the bigger of twin boys born that day — and from the start, the protector of his twin brother, Martin. Much of their childhood was spent in Whitehall, Michigan, where the two were known around town simply as “Mike and Marty,” a pair whose names belonged together.
Mike had a poet’s soul. He found peace at the shore of Lake Michigan, where he loved to ride his bike, sit in the sun, and count life’s many blessings. He carried a poem he wrote, “Invitation Lake Michigan,” in his pocket for years, and shared it freely with anyone who would listen. He had a gift for rhyme and for finding the beautiful in ordinary things, and he loved animals deeply.
For many year, Mike volunteered as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army, giving his time to others no matter what he himself was facing. Those who knew him remember his warmth, his generosity, and his parting words to loved ones: “Love the one you’re with.”
Michael is survived by his twin brother Martin Cagney; his siblings Thomas Cagney and Ann Cagney; his sisters in law Lisa Cagney, Laurie Cagney and Virginia Cagney and his nieces and nephews Mack Scudder, Kaitlin Cagney, Chris Cagney, Ryan Cagney, Brett Cagney, Kaye Urban, Shannon Izquierdo, and Samantha Fehler. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and George Cagney, and his brothers George and John Cagney.
Michael received the Anointing of the Sick before his passing.
A memorial service will be celebrated on Friday, June 19, 2026, at Manna Church 220 Central Ave., Holland, MI 49423., at 11:00 AM with a visitation at 10:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to Building Men for Life Inc, a community that supported Mike and gave him a home for many years on his journey, or the Humane Society, to honor the deep love Mike had for animals throughout his life.
