LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jun. 18, 2026) – One of the Lakeshore’s more turbulent municipal bodies has another issue to resolve.
Just before the Wednesday night monthly meeting of the Laketown Township Parks and Recreation Commission, it was disclosed that commissioner Sherry Sirko had submitted her resignation this past Friday with immediate effect. The move came prior to an expected censure from her board colleagues over a confrontation she and her husband had with workers who were gathering seeds at Huyser Farm Park last month, work that had been approved by the township beforehand.
Once the township board formally accepts the resignation at its July 1st workshop, a replacement to complete the remaining two and a half years of Sirko’s four-year term must be made within 45 days. While the censure action was taken off of the parks commission meeting agenda, the board didn’t refer to the incident further during the session, other than in a request by chairman Brad Laninga.
This is the third member of that panel who has stepped down in the middle of their term over the past four years.
