UNDATED (WHTC-AM/FM, Jun. 19, 2026) – Five persons lost their lives in two separate two-vehicle head-on crashes during the overnight hours on Friday.
No names were initially disclosed as first responders were dispatched to I-96 just west of the 16th Avenue exit near Marne around 3:25 AM. That was where a westbound SUV, going the wrong way in the eastbound lanes, slammed into a eastbound SUV. A 24-year-old Clyde man in the at-fault vehicle, along with a 53-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man, both from Muskegon, all perished at the scene from injuries sustained in the collision.
Two hours earlier, another head-on crash on I-196 near the Lane Avenue exit in Grand Rapids cost the lives of an unnamed 36-year-old Grand Rapids man, going east in the westbound lanes, and a 39-year-old Jenison woman, driving a sedan westbound.
Authorities in both incidents didn’t immediately go into the circumstances as investigations continue.
