HEATH TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jun. 23, 2026) – We are learning more about the drowning of a boy in the Rabbit River in Hamilton over the weekend.
On Saturday night, a bystander at what locals call “Trestle Park” noticed the two apparent brothers struggling in the waters off of Heath Township Park around 6:30 PM and attempted to rescue them. He was able to bring one the boys to safety, but the other succumbed to a fast-moving current, and his body was recovered about four hours later.
According to WWMT-TV, deputies say the two youths were apparently visiting family members and were fishing near the river when the incident occurred. The one child who died wasn’t able to swim, while the other who was rescued was treated at an unnamed hospital and released.
Neighbors have set up a memorial at the site to honor the youngsters, and a couple of life jackets have been placed there in the hopes of preventing future tragedies. The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office is expected to disclosed the names and ages of the brothers on Tuesday.
