GANGES TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jul. 14, 2026) – An effort to kill an invasive species in an Allegan County stream is slated to begin on Tuesday.
Over a 10-day period, US Fish and Wildlife Service staffers hope to go over Pier Cove Creek in the Fennville area, looking to eradicate sea lamprey larvae which have burrowed in the stream bottom through lampricides allowed under state permits. These invasive Atlantic Ocean creatures came into the Great Lakes via shipping canals over a hundred years ago, and infested tributaries have been treated on a regular basis since 1958 to prevent “significant” damage to the Great Lakes fishery.
This effort is dependent on weather or stream conditions at the time of the treatment. More information on this initiative is here.
