Sugie Young, 84, died peacefully in her sleep on July 7, 2026, at her home in Holland, Michigan, surrounded by her three sons and her family, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Born September 16, 1941, in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was the daughter of Lucien Benson Layne and Elizabeth Morris Layne. Sugie began her education at Bennett College before completing her undergraduate degree and a master’s degree in social work at Rutgers University.
Sugie had a huge heart, and she went on to practice social work in New Jersey for 15 years, dedicating herself to the wellbeing of others. She was always looking for ways to help and connect with people, and she had a gift for making new acquaintances feel welcome and comfortable — a quality that touched everyone who knew her.
She loved playing tennis, paddle tennis and golf, and is the only one in her family to card a hole-in-one. In her spare time, she loved to needlepoint, crochet and knit, in addition to crafting custom jewelry, a passion that brought joy to many of her family and friends.
Sugie was initially married to Edward G. Webb, Jr., with whom she had three children, Edward Gedney Webb III, Jeffrey Morris Webb, and Lucien Gex Webb, and later married to Stuart A.
“Rusty” Young III up until 2015. She made her permanent home in Castle Park Michigan for the past two decades, where she had been an avid member of the community since she first visited at the early age of 3.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her two brothers, Lucien Layne and Thomas Layne.
Elizabeth is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law, Ged and Nikki Webb, Jeff and Liz Webb, and Luke and Christina Webb, and six grandchildren, Lexie, Cole, Nolan, Jack, Layne, and Emmie, who will carry forward her warmth and her love of family.
