HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jul. 29, 2026) – Monday’s passing of Zeeland City Manager Tim Klunder from melanoma brings to light one of the biggest dangers facing everyone during the summer months.
While there are many causes of this serious type of skin cancer, which develops in the cells making skin pigment, exposure to natural sunlight, or artificial sources such as tanning beds, can damage skin cell DNA and increase the chances of coming down with melanoma. Dr. Amy Milewski, associate chief medical officer with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, cautions about the warning signs one can spot.

Mr. Klunder suffered from this disease for five years before his death at the age of 57. A celebration of life for him is slated for 1 PM on Friday at Faith Church (220 W. Central Ave.), with visitation from 5-8 PM the evening before in the Hoogland Room of the Howard Miller Community Center (14 S. Church St.). Arrangements are being made through the Yntema Funeral Home.
