HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 1, 2026) – School bells ring later this month, and an annual concern for districts is having enough bus drivers on hand.
This week, Allendale Public Schools announced the elimination of bus service in some areas because of a driver shortage. New non-transportation zones will take effect when the school year begins, with some parents raising concerns about student safety and walking distances, but district officials say they will continue trying to recruit more drivers.
Along those lines, Holland Public Schools is seeking to address this issue by staging a “Buses & BBQ” event this coming Wednesday, from 3:30 to 6 PM, at the district’s Maintenance and Transportation Center (870 S. Waverly Rd.). Besides a free barbeque dinner, attendees can test drive a school bus on an obstacle course, and on-the-spot job interviews will be conducted.
According to district spokesman Jason Craner, paid training for those wishing to fill part-time transportation positions will be provided by the district.
