HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 19, 2026) – Another step in the process of having a dedicated municipal recreation center in the city of Holland could take place on Wednesday night.
The City Council is being asked to authorize up to $22 million in Limited Tax General Obligation Bonds to pay for constructing a multi-use, 83,000 square foot complex adjacent to Smallenburg Park, off of Fairbanks Avenue near Ray & Sue Smith Stadium. The structure would feature four full-sized basketball courts, which could be converted for other purposes, along with multi-use spaces to accommodate non-sports related recreation programming.
How soon would this facility become a reality? City Manager Keith Van Beek wouldn’t commit to a specific time line, but expects things to move somewhat quickly.
The 6 PM Holland City Council meeting is in Chambers at Holland City Hall (270 S. River Ave.). An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
