OLIVE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Oct. 14, 2026) – The Ottawa County Board won’t make a move yet on the use of the Flock surveillance system by the county Sheriff’s Office.
During Tuesday’s Planning and Policy Committee meeting, Commissioner Allison Miedema put forward a proposed resolution which would establish a temporary pause on the renewal or extension of any existing automated license plate reader contracts, and on the purchase, installation or expansion of additional devices, technologies, and contracts, along with prohibiting the county from using fixed systems, but allowing vehicle-mounted devices on deputy-present vehicles.
However, Sheriff Eric DeBoer argued about the practicality of implementing the resolution.
The committee agreed to not put forward Miedema’s proposal, but will want the entire board to continue discussions about the future of the Flock system in Ottawa County, as a contract renewal last month will keep it in place for another two years.
