UNDATED (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 28, 2026) – The area between Holland and Grand Haven took the brunt of storms that blew through the Lakeshore on Monday.
According to Find Energy-dot-com, over 73 hundred Consumers Energy customers were without power as dawn approached, with the heaviest concentration along US-31 from Lake Michigan Drive to Croswell Street. The utility is hopeful of restoring electricity to those affected by the end of the day today.
The strong storms that blew through west Michigan killed a 39-year-old Solon Township man. The Kent County Sheriff’s Office says he was outside with friends at a home in Courtland Township and warned them to move out of the way of a large tree due to strong winds. It fell on him and killed him in the area of Crinnion Avenue and 16 Mile Road. The Kent County Road Commission says they had between 25 and 30 trees that were reported down, and some of them were very large.
Meanwhile, strong winds knocked a tree over onto a home in the area of Hoffman Court and Locust Street in Kalamazoo, trapping a man under the debris. Kalamazoo Public Safety Chief David Boysen says first responders pulled him from under the tree and his front porch and took him to the hospital for treatment. He was sitting on the porch when the tree collapsed. Fire marshal Scott Brooks says crews had challenges with downed power lines and a protective family dog, but were able to rescue the man.
