ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jun. 11, 2026) – Motorists at a busy junction near Zeeland’s eastern city limits should expect a slow commute, thanks to a late Wednesday night single-vehicle crash.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Alex DeJong, a 20-year-old woman from the Detroit suburb of Farmington Hills was driving her sedan westbound on Chicago Drive (M-121) around 10:30 PM when she was unable to complete a left turn onto Main Avenue. The vehicle skidded off of the wet roadway due to storms in the area, struck a power pole, and damaged a traffic signal box.
The unnamed motorist was apparently unhurt, as she waved off any medical attention offered at the scene. The crash into the pole caused the support wires holding the traffic signals to snap, dropping the devices to the ground. M-DOT crews were able to get the signals back up, but it won’t be until after dawn before technicians are able to repair the box and restore normal signal service.
The incident remains under investigation, and anyone with any information is asked to contact the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
